Setting goals is a crucial part of creating momentum and having direction in your career and personal life. Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start or how to get your thoughts written down, especially if your goals seem too large to tackle. But the bigger the better! Here at Get Community, we believe in setting goals as a company and as people because it always keeps us moving forward and keeps things challenging! So, in the spirit of the new year, we want to share some advice about crafting goals when it comes to your career and your personal life. It’s never too late to start, so here we go!

  1. Firstly, write down your goals! This will help you see which goals are more tangible and attainable.
    • To make it easier, you can break up your plan by a year, 5 years, and 10 years. You can break up your goals by whatever time stamps you would like, but those are the standard. You can also break up your goals into different categories like career, fitness, family, education, etc. This way, you can be more specific about your goals and not feel too overwhelmed!
    • Be as specific as you can be. While our goals for 10 years out might be vague right now, make sure to keep your shorter term goals focused.
    • Don’t forget to make these goals more of a guideline! While it is important to be specific, always remember that life will throw the unexpected at you. Be flexible and respond to changes as they come.
  2. Make sure that your personal life goals are in alignment with career goals.
    • If one of your personal life goals is to move to a different city, but your career goal is to stay at the same company, how are you going to do both? Make sure that there is a certain degree of compatibility amongst all of your goals.
  3. To advance career goals, be vocal about your wants!
    • If you have a certain goal for your career, have a discussion with your boss about how you can move in that direction and how that is going to benefit the company. They won’t know if you don’t tell them! Most likely, they will respond positively to proactive thinking and doing.
  4. Always ground your goals in reality.
    • Be realistic about your goals and your “deadlines.” If you want to switch career paths, be realistic about the work involved and the timeline. Or, if you want to run a marathon, don’t sign up for one happening in two weeks! Give yourself enough time so you won’t feel dismayed if it doesn’t work out.
  5. Don’t forget to include goals for your life outside of work.
    • Work can take over your life if you don’t make time for hobbies and passions. Make sure to carve out time and write down all the things that you want to do outside of your career goals. But, make sure they align (as stated in #2!).
  6. Put your plan into action now!
    • Just writing your goals down isn’t enough! Come up with an actionable schedule for yourself! Create reminders and put them everywhere-- on your desktop, mirror, phone, etc. Having this structure will make it easier for you to start and finish actions.
  7. Lastly, remember to be reflective and positive
    • One of the most important tips that we can give you is to self evaluate. If you are simply moving forward without taking the time to reflect on what you have done that past day, month, year, you will not be able to move forward with your goals in the right way. Reflect in order to change your goals, give yourself more/less time, or add new goals! And when you are reflecting, be positive about the progress that you have made. Learn from what you did in the past and use that as your baseline. You can only go up from there!
